Why Is It Important To Think Like A Burglar?

For most people it’s hard to get inside the mind of a burglar, so we have difficulty thinking like they do.

To be “successful” a lot of burglars use scams to help. One such scam is for the burglar to pose as a representative from a utility company or some other legitimate company. They will knock on your door and ask to read your water meter or some other “important” function. Many times, they will bring along an accomplice, whose job is to create a distraction while the other one quickly searches for smaller valuables to grab.

At other times the burglar may come alone and look for the weakest point of entry so he can come back another time. It’s important to watch for workers from gas or electric companies, cable companies, home renovation companies, roof repairers, pavers or anyone claiming to need access to your home that you didn’t invite beforehand. The best thing to do in these situations is to deny the person access, but it is wise to adopt some security measures in case they or someone else decides to come back another time. They know what they are looking for, and if it seems like you take your home security seriously, they are less likely to try and victimize you.

Physical features such as security bars on doors, security film on windows and heavy duty locks are definite deterrents. The presence of a home security company will also keep them away. Something as simple as a sign on the lawn or a few stickers on the windows will let them know that you are protected. Home security is of major importance because burglars will always be on the look-out for valuables to steal.
